Protecting pets from snakes

The best way to protect your pet from snakes is to discourage them from coming too near your house. Snakes like to hide, so try to remove anything that might attract them, like log stacks or piles of garden rubbish. Keep the grass short and trim any bushes so you can clearly see under them.

Snakes will follow food sources, so try to avoid leaving anything around that could attract rats or mice.

If you live in a bushland area or somewhere with a big population of snakes you may need to build a snake-proof enclosure for your pets to exercise in. You may also need to keep cats indoors to avoid snake encounters.

Always walk your dog on a leash in bush areas or places prone to snakes.
