Why you definitely, absolutely, probably should visit Jakarta

January 5, 2015

Visiting Jakarta could be a love it or hate it experience. Tourists and locals alike will tell you how horrible the traffic jams are, how unreliable the public transportation is, the pick pocketers… and the list goes on and on.

However, behind all these imperfections, Jakarta still holds a lot of treasures for it to be worth a visit. Here are 5 reasons why you should visit Jakarta, the capital and the largest city of Indonesia:

1. It has a rich and colourful culture

Jakarta houses a number of interesting museums and galleries for art & culture enthusiasts. From the National Museum, Jakarta Arts Theater, National Gallery, National Monument, to Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, you will surely come back with extra knowledge on Indonesia’s history and culture.

There is also the biggest mosque in Indonesia, the Istiqlal Mosque and the beautiful neo-gothic style Cathedral located just across the aforementioned mosque.

2. The Food!

Oh my, I don’t even know where to start! Indonesian foods are some of the most delicious in the world and Jakarta is the melting pot for all of them. Trying out the different types of Indonesian foods in Jakarta can actually be quite overwhelming since Indonesia has 33 provinces and each of them has their own specialty cuisines. I mean… how can you resist this?

Some advice though: avoid roadside food stalls if you have a sensitive stomach and not wish to befriend the toilet bowl for the next three days.

 3. Shopping to your heart content

Many say Jakarta has one of the best shopping options available. From local to international brands, you are spoiled for choices and not to mention the gigantic shopping malls conveniently scattered all around Jakarta. I personally think Jakarta has some of the best shopping malls in South East Asia. Be ready to get lost inside as some of them can be really huge!

4. The bustling nightlife

Jakarta is often called “the city that never sleeps” (sorry NYC, you’re not the sole winner of this title anymore) for a reason. The city has its own charm when the night falls. The skyline decorated by millions of lights looking beautiful and nightclubs and bars are never found lacking patrons.

Whether you want to just chill out and have a cocktail or two or dancing all night long, you’ll definitely find a club that suits your preference!

5. Exploring nature and enjoying the cool breeze

If you feel like a change from the hustle and bustle of Jakarta, take a 2-hour car ride to Puncak (literally means ‘the Peak’), a mountainous area overlooking tea plantations for some fresh air, tea walks, or horseback rides through the hills. Do stop by at Puncak Pass for some snacks while being wrapped up in your jacket and enjoying the cool mist up there.

So are you ready to Enjoy Jakarta?

P.S: The Indonesian government just lifted the Tourist Visa Requirement for Australians, so now you can visit Indonesia anytime you want without needing to apply for a visa!
