Volunteer Personal Accident Insurance

Volunteer Personal Accident Insurance

Around six million people across Australia volunteer their time and skills to help causes they care about, and volunteers are the lifeblood of many Australian charities. But volunteers may not be covered by insurance policies that protect employees – so what happens if a volunteer gets injured in the course of their work? What can you do to help give them the protection they deserve?

We've teamed up with Aon, the approved insurance broker for Volunteering Australia, to let you know about a broad and cost-competitive personal accident insurance product for volunteers of any age, anywhere in Australia.*

Volunteer Personal Accident Insurance in brief*

Aon's volunteer insurance has been specifically designed for organisations that rely on the valuable contribution of volunteers. It may also be suitable for individuals who volunteer for charities that do not have a volunteer personal accident policy in place, so you can help protect yourself in case something should go wrong while you are volunteering.

As an organisation you can buy this cover as a standalone policy or as part of a broader insurance package.

If an accident while volunteering for your organisation leaves you no longer able to do their everyday job, the financial impact could be devastating. To help assist Aon's volunteer personal accident insurance can provide weekly benefits (your choice of up to $500 or up to $1k per week) for up to two years to cover lost income in these circumstances. Be sure to check out the PDS and full policy terms and conditions for full details.

Many volunteer insurance policies have age limits – but not when you buy your volunteer personal accident insurance through Aon's volunteer insurance policy. As long as your volunteers are able to take instructions and work alone you can take out this cover to help protect them. Please note that that all benefits may not be available to those aged 60 years or over.*

Aon's volunteer personal accident cover can help protect volunteers anywhere in Australia, including while travelling in association with their volunteer work.

If the very worst should happen, Aon have built a broad range of benefits into its volunteer insurance, including a choice of $25k, $50k or $100k death benefit, up to $10k funeral expenses cover and up to $10k cover for home or car modifications resulting from quadriplegia or paraplegia. There's also up to $10k built-in cover for medical expenses not covered by Medicare and $1k for pharmaceutical expenses.*

It's quick and easy to buy volunteer personal accident cover – when you apply online, Aon will ask you to answer five simple questions to provide an on-the-spot quote, and you can buy cover instantly in just four steps.

We know that you expect high-quality products at affordable prices from 1300 Insurance, so we've teamed up with one of Australia's leading insurance brokers – who also happen to be the approved insurance broker for Volunteering Australia – to let you know about this specialised volunteer personal accident insurance cover.

Policy Benefits

Aon's volunteer personal accident insurance is designed to give your valuable volunteers cover for medical expenses and lost income if something happens in the course of their volunteering. It's also available if you're an individual volunteer and you want to help protect yourself while volunteering.

If an accident while volunteering leaves a volunteer unable to do their regular job, Aon's volunteer personal accident insurance can help cover them for lost income for up to two years (104 weeks). This is paid as a weekly benefit, covering the lower of the actual amount of income they have lost, or the amount you choose to insure (either $500 a week or $1k a week)*.

If a volunteer is a homemaker who does not have another job but is injured to the point where they can't carry out their domestic duties (including child care), the policy also can include cover for the costs of emergency help at home.

Other built-in features of Aon's volunteer insurance policy include a choice of $25k, $50k or $100k death / disablement cover, with lump-sum payments on a sliding scale for the following serious injuries:

  • Up to two years lost income
  • Death and disablement cover
  • Funeral expenses
  • Medical expenses not covered by Medicare
  • Home or car modifications resulting from quadriplegia or paraplegia
  • Out-of-pocket expenses
  • Pharmaceutical expenses

Conditions and limits apply to each type of benefit – please refer to the PDS for full details of what is covered and benefit limits.

The cost of your volunteer personal accident insurance will depend on a number of factors, including:

  • The number of volunteers you wish to insure
  • Whether they will be working indoors or outdoors
  • Whether they will be involved in any hazardous activities like kitchen duties, or working with animals

Your premiums may also be impacted if you or any of your volunteers have made a claim exceeding $5,000 on a similar policy during the past seven years.

Before you buy any type of insurance, you have a duty of disclosure to tell the insurer anything you know and that a reasonable person in the circumstances would include in their answer, to any questions the insurer asks that are relevant to their decision to insure you and on what terms.

This duty applies until the insurer agrees to insure you. If you don’t comply, the insurer may cancel your contract, reduce the amount payable for a claim, or both. If your failure is fraudulent, the insurer can refuse a claim and treat the contract as if it never existed.
